projects_

My oldest projects include games from my college video game design courses at the University of Utah. There will be personal projects varying in stages of the development process including prototypes, levels, and complete games. Some projects are in collaboration with a team to achieve a finished product.

game_jams

Game jams are a way for me to creatively experiment with new game design ideas and collaborate on a team. These are meaningful experiences that help me grow as a developer and person. I'm currently working on my programming skills so that I could participate in a jam solo.

Featured (coincidentally and luckily) on RaceAceTM's Twitch stream. There's not a day that this doesn't bring a smile to my face. Also featured on site: "Museum of Screens"

The Last Slice is the second jam game I've ever made under certain constraints and a theme. The second complete game with a team. We used this experience to learn a variety of skills and toolsets. Our resident programmer dipped their toes in art and the back up programmer became lead programmer #2. The traditionally 3D artist was courageous enough to conquer 2D pixel art. These are the kinds of experiences that I hold dear to me from my short time with jams. Some examples of my contributions are below:

My work consisted of writing, a bit of programming, sprite/tileset art, level design, UI design and title screen design along with organization and delegation of tasks. This is my proudest accomplishment to date! The team comprised of 5 came together to acomplish something amazing. I was able to gain experience in a new engine, working with a team, etc.

Give Us This Day Our Daily Bread was the first game jam game I ever made. I loved it. The process was fun and rewarding. The theme was "Flipping the Perspective." Our team took that approach and spun it on its head when we came up with the idea for a duck that fed bread to humans in the name of being an avid nature lover. I worked on UI design like the Duck face timer and oven/mixer gauges and general game design. 3D modeling some props, simple UV/texturing.The game won first place in the game jam! We were beyond ecstatic. This was the start of greatness for me. See some of my work on the project below:

Kepler was the first game I ever developed in a team (and in life) and I'm showing it off to this day. It taught me a lot about working with others, foundations of game design, 3D modeling, organization, and the list is endless. I also contributed on some 2D UI icons that indicated to the player what kind of item they collected and how many were left to find. My work below:

Biodegradable Barry is a short point and click game about a racoon who is a little bit bitter about the way humans are treating the planet! It was a University of Utah Alternative Game Dev course game developed over one semester following the design process from pitch to wrap kit. The course emphasized "alternative" value for the game meaning that there had to be something else to it other than gameplay and fun. A message of some kind. My team of three landed on Biodegradable Barry which was my original pitch/idea.

Utilize Barry's prowess of the night as all humans are asleep. Use the "Recyclopedia" pages to sort trash correctly to get scored by Barry himself!
See some work below:

I was involved with a little bit of everything on this project. Above are some examples of specific art that I contributed to the project including item sprites, instruction pages, "Recyclopedia" pages, item info cards, dialogue and one-liners. The latter can be found in the writing samples tab. I bet you're wondering, hey, why is that screen black? Well, simply put, Bio. Barry has been shelved permanently as it was never completed before the semester ended. That's not to say that I'm not proud of it. Everything is a lesson. And I'm grateful to my team (Payton, Zuber) and the game.

Midnight Dial is a landmark game for me. My first project outside of a game jam or school project that would be sold for actual money, if we had any luck at all. I met the designer, Sean, through Reddit when he reached out to me regarding a self promotional post I had made for myself after I graduated. I wrote test dialogue conversations after I was pitched the idea. I would hear back once Sean made his decision.

I got a message just hours later and was in game design discussion for the remainder of the day. I was ecstatic to have been chosen for something game dev related. Someone found value in what I produced so much that they chose me among other candidates.

I wrote extensive dialogue involving conversations from an assortment of characters of my creation from a conspiracy theorist radio host to an irritated park ranger to an angry citizen. This took many days to figure out what style these should be written in along with how the choices would affect gameplay. The limitations were that there is only one small area in the game, most of it relying on writing to carry certain story segments when the player interacted with certain objects or paths.
